To say that I feel great and unadulterated joy now that the mid-term elections are over is a gross understatement. For at least the past three or four months, we’ve all endured hundreds or maybe thousands of political commercials and ads either supporting or vilifying this or that candidate and it has been nothing short of sheer torture. The only thing I could think about was the millions and millions of dollars spent on these ads that could have helped the homeless, our disabled vets or those less fortunate than us who are in desperate need of assistance and it was all spent on some person who possibly would or would not get into political office. Sheer lunacy. And, those who make it into these offices will then reap the monetary benefits of such without a single thought of supporting those very people they were elected to help. Their work will mostly entail fighting against the opposing political party helping to ensure their own party stays in power. And, we all know power is the ultimate aphrodisiac…it runs the world. It always strikes me as odd (you know, that thing that makes you think “hmmm”?) that a person can enter a political office with say about $25,000 to their name, but in a few short years, have so much money in their bank accounts (usually in the millions) that it is difficult to count it all. So very sad and possibly criminal to say the least, and quite thought provoking, (does insider trading come to mind?) A famous comedian once joked that “A politician should wear sponsor jackets like Nascar drivers so we know who owns them”.
I recently saw something online that said “Red or blue, they’re all liars. They’re draining our wallets, contaminating our food and water, and influencing our children (in a negative way). They’re all evil and corrupt while we’re all too busy fighting over which one is doing it”. These people are so enraptured with who is at fault, that they totally fail to see the injustices and crimes often being committed by these politicians. It doesn’t matter to John Q. Public that this or that politician has committed a crime, unless that person belongs to the political party they’re currently not supporting or aligned with.
There is so much to say to unpack that simple statement, it’s hard to know where to begin. I have some friends who are ultra liberal and some who are ultra conservative and a lot of them live in a world encompassed by worshipping CNN, MSNBC, Fox News or any other liberal or conservative news outlet, and they bow down at the alter of the talking pundits. Sometimes trying to speak with them about any real social issues is very often a total waste of time as they’ve already made up their minds and their opinions are etched in stone. This, all due to what some idiotic political talking head has drilled into their minds. There is so very often no middle ground to having a cogent, understandable conversation with them. Again, so very sad and heartbreaking.
So, as I’ve written before, and at my particular age, I’ve decided to (as much as possible) ignore any news coverage other than local “goings on” and the weather and completely disregarding and overlooking anything national or political. Paying attention to this drivel, so very much robs me of my joy and peace and very often makes me anxious, apprehensive and uneasy. And, if I don’t stay mindful, it can take away from me the One entity that I should be totally relying on and that entity is God.
In my spiritual beliefs, it is God being the only One Who controls all that we see, hear and are exposed to and keeping Him in the forefront of our spirits, hearts and minds, for me, is the only thing I should ever and always be focused on. But, I’ve recently seen it said that “No election will EVER fix a nation whose people no longer fear or believe in God”, and I so very much believe that. It is also biblically stated that “God appoints all authority”. And, we may ask “well then if that is so, why is this person or that person in office?” My only answer to that is His wisdom is greatly beyond our human comprehension and He can answer that for us when we stand before Him. My peace, joy and contentment can and will only be found in Him and nothing can or ever will replace that. Honestly, I really don’t care who is or is not in any political office. It doesn’t matter to me, not one single iota.
Those people who know me well are fully aware of my spiritual beliefs and I can’t help it if they either like or dislike what I’ve written and/or what I believe. Everything I’ve ever “put to paper” comes directly from my heart and my love of the Lord and my personal wishes and desires are that they somehow can understand exactly what I am saying, in all subject matters relative to this or any other topic. And, if not, as dear friends, you’ll still be in my prayers.
At this age, I no longer care about worldly things. I care only about walking with spiritual strength, caring deeply for those I love and exuding a humble, Godly grace that only He can give…
There is an Old Testament scripture from Joshua 1:9 that is one of my favorite passages. It says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go”. This knowledge and understanding is really all I need to walk out the rest of my days.
So, with all this said, if ever asked whether I’m a democrat, a republican or anything else, my response will be very simple…
What I am is a Christian, and through Christ, I fully know in my heart, mind and spirit that everything will be all right.
